About

The ARDES project will develop and validate a short learning program (SLP) for higher education about Art, Design & Sustainability. This SLP aims to integrate climate change and sustainability into art and design curricula, to integrate knowledge and values associated with climate change and sustainability through engagement with art and sustainability, and to communicate these topics with the audience/citizens, using digital tools for interactive engagement, increasing their commitment towards climate change mitigation and sustainability.

Why?

  • There’s a considerable gap between the concern of young Europeans about Climate Change & sustainability and their personal commitment.
  • Scientific knowledge is not enough to change attitudes to actively engage with CC & sustainability. They require a social conscience and a civic responsibility that emerge from values & education. The arts are some of the most powerful values to significantly influence a community’s understanding and experience of sustainability & CC.
  • In higher art education, there are degrees/masters related to new media, cultural management, and communication. But few provide open & innovative, project-based learning by teaching how to bring design, sustainability and CC into the artistic expressions.

Objectives

  • Increase the effectiveness of the understanding & experience of CC competences through an innovative Short Learning Program for higher education institutions.
  • Reduce skills mismatches between the curricula of the art & design degrees and the UN Agenda 2030.
  • Provide art & design teachers and students with open educational resources to enhance motivation, opportunity and ability for sustainability action with art.
  • Produce innovative learning outcomes to allow for a sufficient degree of engagement of the students, ranging from research, analysis, reflection & production process of the artwork.
  • Make the learning program capable of evidencing the skills acquired by students during the classes during their extracurricular artwork productions or community work.
  • Develop the digital competence of the professors.

What we will do?

  • To study the approach of art design as a communication medium about sustainability and climate change.
  • To develop a 4-module (8 ECTS) short-learning programme for higher education about Art, Design & Sustainability. It will consist of a curriculum, the course planning, lessons plan, assignment, assessment criteria and the corresponding teaching & learning material.
  • To integrate digital tools to evidence and assess the artwork projects of students and to engage audiences in the principles of improvisation and the use of mobile technologies.
  • To launch a call for the students to produce extracurricular design artworks for an exhibition at LABA Valencia.
  • A short-term staff training with teachers and students

In the summer of 2023, the ARDES project will organize a 3-day short-term staff training in Valencia. The main objective is to familiarize the teachers with the X methodology of the short learning program, the learning material and assessment, and the e-learning platforms.

  • 2 pilot activities in Spain, Portugal and Cyprus, involving 6 teachers and 90 students
  • 3 multiplier events to promote the results

The ARDES project partners will organize 3 multiplier events to present the project outcomes. These events are planned for January 2024 and will take place in Cyprus, Barcelona and Valencia.

E1 Symposium: Sustainability and CC education with art & design for postgraduates’ art studies, will be organized by EINA in Barcelona, Spain. This multiplier event promotes the project activities and outputs among professors, students and managers of degrees/ master’s in art & design at higher education institutions, and among educational policymakers and local authorities.

E2. Symposium: Sustainability and CC education with art & design for postgraduates’ art studies will be organized by European University Cyprus (EUC) in Nicosia, Cyprus. This multiplier event promotes the project activities and outputs among professors, students and managers of degrees/ master’s in art & design at higher education institutions, and among educational policymakers and local authorities.

E3. Symposium: Digital evidence of the skills needed to educate on Sustainability and CC with the art will be organized by MyDocumenta (MYD) in Valencia, Spain, in collaboration with LABA Valencia. Special emphasis will be put on how ARDES has created innovative learning outcomes such as the recognition of student’s extracurricular artwork productions or community work related to sustainability and climate change through the organisation of an exhibition of artworks.
